Early Life & Education
Jose Poomala was born on May 5, 1950, in Marangoly, Kottayam District, Kerala. From a young age, he showed a deep sense of responsibility toward his community and a passion for helping others. He pursued his education at St. Thomas High School, Kilianthara, later continuing his higher studies at the University of Calicut and the Co-operative College, Calicut. This foundation prepared him for a lifelong journey in cooperative movements, social service, and political leadership.
Family
Jose Poomala is married to Leela M.G., and together they raised a family rooted in strong values of service and compassion. They are blessed with children:
- Swapna P Jose
- Sweety P Jose
- Sincy P Jose
- Amal J Poomala (who sadly left us on 09-02-2015)
Despite personal hardships, Jose Poomala has continued his mission of serving farmers and society with unwavering determination.
Career in Cooperative Service
Jose Poomala began his public life in the cooperative sector. He served as the Secretary of Kilianthara Service Co-operative Bank Ltd., Kannur, where he played a key role in strengthening financial support systems for local farmers and families.
His work in cooperatives earned him recognition as a leader who could combine financial knowledge with grassroots social activism. This path naturally led him into larger roles within farmers' organizations and the political sphere.
Political Journey
Jose Poomala is an active member of the Indian National Congress and has dedicated decades to political and social causes. Currently, he serves as:
- President, Kerala Pradesh Karshaka Congress (Kannur District Committee)
- State Chairman, Kerala Pradesh Cashew Cell
- State Secretary, Kerala Primary Co-operative Service Pensioners Association
- Marketing Chairman (Director), Iritty Coconut Farmers Producer Company Ltd.
Contributions to Agriculture & Farmers
Jose Poomala is widely recognized as an agricultural and social activist in Kerala.
When cashew cultivation in Kerala faced decline, he spearheaded the Cashew Cultivation Extension Project under the Kerala Pradesh Cashew Cell to restore the industry to its former glory. Through this initiative, cashew seedlings were distributed free of cost to farmers, alongside subsidies and educational classes to promote modern farming practices.
Understanding the struggles of coconut farmers, he formed producer groups and established the Iritty Coconut Farmers Producer Company Ltd., enabling farmers to receive direct benefits from the Coconut Development Board and government schemes.
These initiatives have created long-lasting impact by empowering farmers, creating cooperatives, and securing better livelihoods for thousands of families.
Social Activism
Beyond farming, Jose Poomala is deeply involved in community service and social welfare. He leads the Amal J Poomala Charitable Trust, named in memory of his late son, which provides support in education, healthcare, and social empowerment programs.
He has also organized and led several farmers' protests and awareness programs, ensuring that the voices of agricultural workers are heard at the state level.
Religious Achievements
Jose Poomala has also made significant contributions to the spiritual and religious life of his community.
- Trustee member, St. Sebastian's Church, Nellikkampoyil and Ulikkal Infant Jesus Church
- Served about 15 years as KCYM regional animator
- Sunday School Teacher and Mission League President
- AKCC President and Vincent de Paul President
During his tenure as AKCC President, Ulikkal Infant Jesus Church was recognized as the best AKCC parish in the Thalassery Archdiocese.
He is also known for his deep biblical knowledge and as an inspiring preacher.
Under his leadership:
- A palliative OP clinic was established to treat cancer patients, offering free medicines and medical tests.
- Through the Amal J Poomala Charitable Trust, three key projects were launched:
- • Snehasparsham – for patient care
- • Educare – for supporting underprivileged students
- • Agri Vision – for supporting the agricultural sector
In addition, he has served:
- 15 years as a member of Koothuparamba Circle Co-operative Union
- State Co-operative Union Delegate Person
- State Resource Person, conducting training sessions for co-operative sector officials and directors.
